In the firmament of Higher Education in Odisha,the name of the Kandarpur College appeared in 1st December 1978 on the premises of Gopal Smruti Vidyapitha, Sidheswarpur with its available makeshift arrangements. Regimentation of interest with farsightedness and rigours of desire of founder members, able, efficient guidance of members of management, visionary blue print and administrative alumenship of the eminent agricultural Scientist Dr. Biswanath Sahoo, the first Principal of the college helped it to grow gaining its potentiality and popularity.With the opening of Intermediate Arts the college got its Government recognition and affilation to Utkal University in 1978-1980. The first batch of students appeared their I.A examination in 1981.
For the promotion of better studies in wider scope and establishing an identity the college premise was shifted to its own campus at a sprawling patch of land in an adjacent village, Athanga in 1983-84.Today the college stands in an idyllic lush green surrounding with its monumental concrete structures.Although its campus is fifteen kilometers away to the east of Cuttack city and two kilometers away from Kandarpur Bazar. It enjoys double advantages for its accessibility to Cuttack-Paradeep State Highway and to Kandarpur Railway Station. This facilitates the student flow from far and distant places for academic benefits.
With the change of National Education Policy and introduction of 10+2+3 education system in Odisha.+2 stream came into force in place of Intermediate Course in 1983-1984. Soon after this +2 commerce was opened in 1986-1987.In 1987-1988 +3 Arts stream with pass subjects English, Odia, History, Political Science ,Economics ,Education opened. In 1991-1992 science stream was also opened bringing a fullfledgedness to this college at the Higher Secondary Level and the subject ITV as elective started from 2018-19 at Higher Secondary level in Arts , Science and Commerce.
With the possibilities of providing need based education Honours Subjects in English, History, Political Science were opened in 1992-1993 with Education and Philosophy Honours with Sanskrit(Pass) in 2012-13 and in 2016-17 (Odia and Economics (Hons.)) joined as sister units respectively adding a new dimension to its academic environment. +3 science stream opened in 2019-2020 with Honours Subject Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology and Mathematics as elective subject. The computer Fundamentals is opened under NEP -2020 as MDC course from 2024-25. The college is running with the NEP-2020 Syllabus and guidelines by Utkal University, Bhubaneswar.
Members of peer team of NAAC(National Assessment and Accreditation Coucil), an Autonomous body of University Grant Commission (UGC) has visited the institution in 2005. The team recommended favourably to NAAC for endorsing the grade point C++ for which the certificate of recognition was accorded in 2006 for the first time. During the 2nd Cycle of NAAC, the Peer Team of NAAC visited in 2016 for Reaccreditation and extended B Grade to the college.
The college was selected and received allocated fund by Higher Education Dept. under RUSA-0.1 assistance for infrastructure building and renovation of Girls Common Room and class room. Additionally Higher Education Department of Odisha allocated different substantial grants to Kandarpur college for infrastructure development and other renovation projects for different laboratories,e- library, smart class rooms, additional class rooms.
Separate funds have been received from Higher Education Department for Development o f ICT Laboratory,books for library,Start Up and Innovation , Self Defence Training for girls student etc.
The college has organized various programmes under National Service Scheme (NSS) and Youth Red Cross (YRC) encouraging students to participate in community service initiatives like Eye Camp ,Blood Donation Camp, Plantation Drive,AIDS Rally,Road Safety Awareness,Antiragging ,Cyber security,Sexual Harassment and POSH Act etc. and contribute to wellbeing of the local population.
The college caters to the academic and non academic requirements of the students and conspicuously devoted to its aim of empowering women by virtue of the education process as more than 60% students are girls. Besides the college holistically pursues towards the personality d evelopment of the students and make them prompt and proficient to compete others through acquisition of knowledge and wisdom
